Jefferson Lab Regional Science Bowl

Jefferson Lab is once again hosting one of the Department of Energy's Regional Science Bowl Competitions. This competition is open to high school and middle school teams from across Virginia. The high school competition will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2024 and the middle school competition will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2024. We need your help to make this event a success! Here's what you can do:

Moderator - The moderator is the person in control of each match. The moderator must have a clear understanding of the competition rules and a clear speaking voice. The moderator reads the questions, recognizes the team member who will answer the question and indicates if the team's answer is correct or incorrect. If you are interested in being a moderator, please download the moderator's summary file.

Science Judge - The science judge is an 'in the room' expert and has the authority to resolve a challenge within their area of expertise. If you are interested in being a science judge, please download the science judge's summary file.

Rules Judge - The rules judge ensures that all competition rules are followed. The rules judge also watches for errors in scorekeeping and timekeeping and monitors the audience to ensure the competitors are not receiving 'extra' help. If you are interested in being a rules judge, please download the rules judge's summary file.

Timekeeper - The timekeeper is responsible for operating the competition clock and announcing the end of each 8 minute half. The timekeeper also keeps track of the 5 second buzz-in period after the reading of a 'toss-up' question and the 20 second period allowed for answering a 'bonus' question. If you are interested in being a timekeeper, please download the timekeeper's summary file.

Scorekeeper - The scorekeeper is responsible for accurately recording the points earned by each team: 4 points for each correct 'toss-up' question, 10 points for each correct 'bonus' question and 4 points for each 'toss-up' question that was interrupted and incorrectly answered by the opposing team. If you are interested in being a scorekeeper, please download the scorekeeper's summary file.

All volunteers need to be familiar with the competition rules. A pdf version of the rules is available for review.

Please contact Rhonda Bell, 269-7633, if you are interested in volunteering for this event.

Thank you!
