Experimental Hall C - High Momentum Spectrometer

Experimental Hall C - High Momentum Spectrometer

This detector is one of the main tools used by scientists at Jefferson Lab. Some of the electrons that hit the target will fly down this arm. As those electrons pass through the large blue electromagnet they will be bent towards the ceiling and strike detectors in the pale blue box. By studying where the electrons go, scientists can tell how atoms in the target are put together. Large wheels on railroad tracks allow the scientists to move the entire detector assembly around the target.
