Theme: Weaving a Tapestry for Science Learning
Strands:
The Wrap: The Leading Edge of Science Content
Fabric cannot exist without a supporting structure, a starting point from which bears the overall pattern. Science content expands by leaps and bounds every year, from the intricacies of DNA sequences to the nature of distant worlds. Staying up-to-date in the field allows teachers to rekindle excitement, both for themselves as well as their students.
The Pattern: Integration of Curricular Elements
The Tapestry of science is a rich cloth, one that draws from all disciplines as it strives to describe the real world around us. Integrating the physical, Earth and life sciences in instruction, especially when supported by inquiry and technology, allows teachers to guide students in the framing of instruction for students to perceive the personal relevance of their science experience.
The Weave: Inquiry and Technology
for Science Learning
Just as a bundle of threads can make only the skimpiest of cloth, science content needs a solid means of making it practical for instruction. Among the strongest threads to weave in science content are Inquiry and Technology, where students learn science bu doing science, emulating both the tools and techniques of scientists.
The Finish: Making Sense of Assessment
Cloth proves its value through the tightness of the warp and weave, the durability over time, and the vibrant colors and textures it can bear. Assessment is both a measure and a tool, one that allows teachers to develop as well as present their professionalism as they design and deliver instruction, as well as sharing the results.
