Frostbite Theater
The Dance of the Chips
Relax and Unwind with "The Dance of the Chips!"
Announcer: Frostbite Theater presents... Cold Cuts! No baloney!
Joanna and Steve: Just science!
Other than for relaxation, what's the point of this? This is a way to model convection. The chips are denser than the soda, so they sink. Then, bubbles form on the chips. This lowers their effective density. The chips float once their effective density is low enough. The chips sink again if too many bubbles pop. And so the dance of the chips continues... at least until the soda goes flat. So, enjoy it while it lasts!
