The mechanical engineering department is involved in a wide variety of tasks. This summer I was given the opportunity to gain experience with Adobe Acrobat in order to modify song sheets of the beam accelerator. I've also been exposed to several different projects involving the use of NX 9 modeling program. This program was used to create 3D models of many objects such as magnets and insertable dumps. My main project revolves around the insertable dump. The insertable dump's primary purpose is to be able to stop the flow of electrons through the beam. However, when the beam is stopped a large amount of radiation is created due to the collision of the electrons. My task at hand is to model the insertable dump in NX 9 and model lead blocks around the machinery to reduce the radiation that is emitted from stopping the beam.
