SpeedMath Deluxe - Order of Operations
When solving an equation, the order in which the numbers are added, subtracted, multiplied and divided matters. The rules that describe 'what goes first' are called the Order of Operations. The rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are:
Multiply and Divide First - working from left to right, complete all multiplication and division.
Add and Subtract Last - once all of the multiplication and division has been completed, add and subtract the remaining numbers, if any, working from left to right.
Example 1: 2 + 3 + 5 * 8
Multiply and Divide First → 2 + 3 + 5 * 8 = 2 + 3 + 40
Add and Subtract Last → 2 + 3 + 40 = 5 + 40 = 45
Example 2: 2 * 3 - 5 * 8
Multiply and Divide First → 2 * 3 - 5 * 8 = 6 - 5 * 8 = 6 - 40
Add and Subtract Last → 6 - 40 = -34
Example 3: 8 / 4 * 2 + 1
Multiply and Divide First → 8 / 4 * 2 + 1 = 2 * 2 + 1 = 4 + 1
Add and Subtract Last → 4 + 1 = 5
Once you understand this, you will be ready to play the game!
